Barbara Janusz-Pawletta, IWMI Regional Representative for Central Asia on regional water cooperation and the role of IFAS:
Multi-sectoral approach should remain central to ongoing regional efforts in water management, particularly as Uzbekistan assumes the presidency of the region’s key water cooperation platform (IFAS) following Kazakhstan, creating an important opportunity to further strengthen regional collaboration and enhance existing mechanisms.
The International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea remains at the core of these efforts, there is a clear need to expand cooperation beyond existing frameworks, including through broader networks, more effective market-based approaches, and ensuring that access to drinking water is modern, equitable, and sustainable, without harming neighboring countries or the environment.
